Fiber Fantasy, April 14-16, 2022

The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council hosts an event every two years known as the Fiber Arts Fiesta. The fiesta is home to the host guilds’ booths, vendors, artist exhibits, educational displays, guild sponsored classes, and a charity booth. The beneficiary of the 2022 fundraiser is the Roadrunner Foodbank.

Each Fiesta has a theme, and Fiesta 2022 is billed as Fiber Fantasy. The participating guilds were tasked with presenting an educational display pertaining to a color or color scheme. The New Mexico Crochet Guild’s presentation was on Complementary Color combinations. As part of the display, the guild created an art piece of freeform crochet called Fantasy Garden and ran a continuous slideshow. The videos were created by Anna Murphy and narrated by Ronni Sparks.

After the fiesta is over, I’ll be sure to post a gallery of photos. It has been a lot of work to plan this, but it has been fun and exciting to work with such dedicated volunteers. The Fiber Arts Council’s dedication and committment to the fiber arts community is so inspiring to the 19 guilds it supports.

The crochet guild is hosting a series of mini-classes during the event called the Crochet Cafe. Each session runs 15-20 minutes and is designed to give students a taste of crochet’s different techniques. Classes range from making simple stitches to keeping your edges square to simple Tunisian and more. Check out the Crochet Cafe.

What’s on My Hook

Plus some finished items too. And, yes, I know it is Friday. But I have been working on this post for two days.

It has been over three weeks since I last posted my WIPs, but lest you think I’ve been slacking, here are some photos of what I’ve been doing.

I finished the 4-Hour Fall Sweater sample for the store, even though my own is not finished. I completed the Headband and Fringed Scarf sample for Michael’s, plus the phone cozy and Floppy Hat.  I’ve done everything but weave in ends and block my Blue Curacao. (What an accomplishment!) I had to prepare for the CAL, which meant making sure the correct yarns had been ordered, getting the pattern ready — to which I added two charts and some notes.

More Crochet and Jewelry Classes

The classes at Michael’s are finally on the calendar and the projects are picked out. As if I didn’t have enough to do, I also signed up at Hobby Lobby on Eagle Ranch Rd to teach both crochet and jewelry making. The set up there is less formal and more to my liking. I get to choose my own projects and set my own fees, while they post the schedule on the web site and allow me to post flyers on a bulletin board just inside the entrance to the store.

Here are my flyers for two of the classes. They are laminated and have little pull tabs on the bottom with contact info. In this case, I do handle all my signups.

I’m really excited about the Hobby Lobby venture and hope it works out. Since I can set my own hours, I’ve decided to try a full kumihimo class of four hours. This is a rewarding project because it is easier than it looks and students feel such a sense of accomplishment when they are done. The flyer is really pretty too.
